Catch and release striped bass/Rockfish
I am currently offering catch and release only for my striped bass trips to try and do my part to conserve the species. We need to release these fish to ensure a future for our kids and their kids. Catch and release also applies to all musky if you are crazy enough to want to fish for them. Musky fishing certainly isn’t a numbers game and a true trophy quest that could take a few trips to get it right.
What to bring?
The fish are already wet so a rain jacket for us human folk may by a good idea. Warm clothes, sunglasses, stuff that can help you stay outside in the elements longer. The more comfortable you are the more you will fish and the more fish you’ll catch. I’ll only cancel if the weather is unsafe or water levels are too high for safe navigation. But there’s almost always options and if you are just itching to fish somewhere, I can almost always find fishable water. Bring a cooler for any fish you may wish to keep. I do not offer fish cleaning at this time. You’ll have to clean those giant cats somewhere else other than the boat ramp. I usually just let everything go. I just like to fight them. “The tug is my drug”, after that, I’d just like to see them get bigger.
Licensed and insured
I have my US Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Inland Master Captain license. The boat and the people on board are insured. I have thousands of hours and days on the water without an incident. I always have two phones and a radio for emergency and weather related warnings. I will always take the safety of my crew first and foremost to allow the most stress free and enjoyable trip on the water.
Your captain
Captain Jon Griffiths has fished the potomac river since the 80’s. I have always had my finger and knowledge on the surrounding “bites” from Canada south to Florida and just about everywhere in between. If I don’t offer the trip, I probably know about it and could likely steer you in the right direction. I have a Bachelor’s Of Science in Wildlife and Fisheries Resources from West Virginia University. During that 5 plus year plan I basically got a PHD in the area trout and musky waters. I could describe in great detail most streams and rivers in Western Maryland and when the fish are the most vulnerable or when they might be the most educated or moody. I can’t help but study and follow the water levels on streams three hours away that I have no intention of fishing any time soon. But we all live down stream and understanding flows up river could greatly affect our day on the water. I talk to fellow captains and some of the best fisherman on the water nearly every day who fish the tidal Potomac and the Chesapeake Bay. We all share information on the most up to date fishing reports imaginable to provide you with the best trip possible.
I am a firm believer in Karma and try to do a good turn daily. I believe we should treat people how we wish to be treated. If we happen to come across another boater in distress, I will always stop to offer my assistance. I am a loving father to three children, 12, 18 and 20. I’ve taken them all fishing a little too often and kind of ruined the idea at an early age. My parents didn’t fish, therefore I’d do anything they wouldn’t and that’s basically what my kids have done. That’s okay, I need a break every now and then and my children are my first priority. I have achieved full fishing bum status while I am currently on the tail end of my first marriage as fishing nearly every day likely didn’t help. Fishing is my life, it’s my drug, my vice and what keeps me sane and insane at the same time. I want to share my passion with the world. I want to show people what it’s like because even after all this time and all that slime on the deck, the pursuit and hunt for that trophy fish never gets old. Check out www.opportunisticfisherman.blogspot.com for other fishing reports and stories. I enjoy writing about my fishing trips almost as much as making them. Something about wanting to share my passion with like minded fisherman. I’m hoping the guiding business helps promote my narrative writing and plan to write and fish till my last breath.
